Multilingual guide for new Filipino mothers in Japan

April 8, 2025

The Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Japan recently launched a multilingual guide for new Filipino mothers in Japan. Motherhood is not easy, and so much more when it is a woman’s first time to give birth, and at a foreign country, at that. This is why the Philippine embassy in Tokyo found it compelling to create and publish this guide. The guide includes important information on health care, legal benefits, and social support on motherhood. Aside from being written in English and Filipino with important Japanese excerpts, it also includes resources and links to online information and materials helpful for mothers.

The guide is a Gender and Development Project of the embassy prepared in collaboration with The Migration Linguistics Initiative at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the International Association for Migration Linguistics, the Migration Linguistics Research Network of the International Association of Applied Linguistics, and the Center for Intellectualization, Translation, and Advocacy of De La Salle University, a TUFS partner institution in Manila, the Philippines.

The guide was written by Dr. Maria Hannah Martin, formerly Lecturer at Juntendo University. It was coordinated by Dr. Ariane Macalinga Borlongan, Associate Professor at our university. The Japanese translation was provided by Mr. Kenichiro Kurusu, Lecturer at the Institute of Japan Studies and the Open Academy.

This guide for new Filipino mothers is part of a bigger Guide for Filipinos in Japan series of the embassy, edited by Dr. Ariane Borlongan and Mr. Kenichiro Kurusu.
